How does Hebrews 11 testify that God's rewarding of His children is a gracious reward, not one of merit?

Eric returned home from catechism class still thinking about the explanation he had heard. He agreed that a person's good works could never earn salvation, yet the Bible speaks clearly about a reward for good works. This puzzled him.
At home he used a Topical Bible and found the following references listed under the topic, "Reward for Good Works":
Moreover by them (God's commandments) is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily He is a God that judgeth in the earth.
Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him.
That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret Himself shall reward thee openly.
And behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
